Merchant of record & U.S. sales tax

Stay compliant with U.S. sales tax—let Zonos handle it for you as MoR.

For U.S. merchants, Zonos Checkout simplifies sales tax compliance by serving as the merchant of record (MoR) for domestic transactions. This means that Zonos takes full responsibility for collecting and filing U.S. sales tax using Zonos' tax IDs, providing a seamless experience for you and your customers, whether you sell domestically, internationally, or both.

Note: This page covers U.S. sales tax specifically for the Zonos Checkout (MoR) integration. For a broader overview of Zonos U.S. sales tax solutions—including API and Shopify integrations, product-specific tax calculations, and general FAQs—see U.S. sales tax.

Zonos as the merchant of record

As the MoR for your U.S. domestic transactions, Zonos takes on the full legal responsibility for managing every aspect of sales tax compliance, including calculating, collecting, remitting, and filing sales tax directly with the appropriate authorities.

We leverage in-house, up-to-date U.S. sales tax data to accurately calculate state, district, county, and city taxes based on the buyer’s location. This end-to-end approach minimizes errors, prevents penalties, and ensures your business stays compliant with all U.S. tax laws.

By using Zonos' tax IDs in each state, your business no longer needs to register, monitor, or manage its own tax obligations. This reduces the administrative burden, allowing you to focus on growing your business.

Zonos on credit card statements

Additionally, as the merchant of record, Zonos appears on the credit card statement for transactions processed through Checkout domestically. This includes being named in Stripe's statement descriptor as "Zonos - [merchant name]" on the credit card statement automatically.
